How to Wash & Care for Your Douglas Dog (ESSA Care Guide)

Keep your ESSA soft, clean and cuddle-ready

Most Douglas® plush dogs are surface-clean only – spot-clean gently with a little mild soap and cool water, and never machine-wash or tumble-dry. Here is how to keep your ESSA soft, fresh and cuddle-ready for years.

Can you wash a Douglas dog?

Douglas dogs are made with soft faux fur, careful airbrushing, gently weighted bean-filled paws and glued features like eyes and noses. That craftsmanship is what makes them so lifelike – and also why they are surface-clean only. A full soak or machine wash can mat the fur, loosen features and disturb the weighting. Always check the sewn-in care tag, but the standard is simple: spot clean, then air dry.

How to spot-clean your ESSA, step by step

  1. Mix a little mild soap with cool water.
  2. Dampen a soft cloth – damp, not soaking.
  3. Gently dab the marked area; don’t scrub hard.
  4. Wipe with a clean, damp cloth to lift the soap.
  5. Press with a dry towel to soak up moisture.
  6. Air-dry away from heat and direct sun.
  7. Once fully dry, gently brush the fur to restore that soft, fluffy feel.

Can a Douglas dog get wet or go in the pool?

Best kept dry. A damp spot-clean is fine, but soaking is not: water can mat the faux fur, affect the airbrushed detail and waterlog the bean-filled paws (which then dry slowly and can smell). So a quick clean – yes; a dunk, bath or trip to the pool – no.

Can you put a Douglas dog in the washing machine or dryer?

No to both. A machine wash agitates and mats the fur and can loosen glued features; the dryer’s heat can damage the fur, warp plastic parts and deform the shape. Always air-dry only, away from radiators and direct sunlight.

Keeping your ESSA fresh between cleans

A few easy habits keep a Douglas dog looking its best: brush the fur occasionally with a soft brush, air it out now and then, and if you want a freshen-up, spritz a little fabric freshener onto a cloth (not directly onto the plush). Store it somewhere dry and dust-free when it is not on cuddle duty.

When in doubt, check the tag

Every Douglas dog has a sewn-in care label – that is always the final word. If your specific ESSA says anything different from the general guidance above, follow the tag.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wash a Douglas dog?

Surface-clean only. Spot-clean gently with mild soap and cool water, then air-dry. Do not machine-wash.

Can Douglas dogs go in the washing machine or dryer?

No. Both can mat the fur, loosen features and damage the shape. Spot-clean and air-dry instead.

Can a Douglas dog get wet or go in the pool?

Keep it dry. A damp spot-clean is fine, but avoid soaking, baths or pools, as water mats the fur and waterlogs the weighted paws.

How do I keep my plush soft?

Air-dry it fully after any spot-clean, then gently brush the fur to bring back its soft, fluffy feel.
