How to Choose the Right Soft Toy for Your Child
Choose a soft toy that fits your child's age, the animal they love, the size they can carry and how often it will need cleaning. Start with age and safety
Age labels on toys are about safety, such as small parts and choking risk, not about how mature a child is. The Douglas® plush we sell are listed for ages 24 months and up (check each product page), so they aren't a choice for babies or young toddlers. They are made for people, not as toys for pets.
For babies, UK safer sleep advice from the Lullaby Trust is to keep the cot clear, with no soft toys or comforters in it.
Whatever you buy, check for a sewn-in label with a CE or UKCA mark, eyes and nose that are firmly fixed, and strong, even seams. Buying from a known seller makes those details easy to find before you order.
Follow the animal they already love
The toy that ends up going everywhere is rarely the one an adult would have picked. It's usually the animal a child already talks about. If there's a family dog, or a breed they point out in the park, a plush that matches it will feel like theirs straight away. Size changes how a toy gets used. Here's how the Douglas® sizes we stock work in everyday life:
- Pocket size, about 13–20 cm. Fits a coat pocket or school bag and is easy to take on trips. Nikita the Husky is 20 cm; the tiniest, such as Prince the German Shepherd, are 13 cm.
- Small, about 25–31 cm. Easy for small hands to carry around and hug.
- Classic, about 41 cm. Big enough for a proper cuddle, light enough to carry. Chase the Border Collie and Bella the Golden Retriever are both 41 cm.

Think about washing before you buy
If a toy is going to school, to the park and to the dinner table, how it gets cleaned matters. Douglas® plush differ here: some are machine washable, and many are surface clean only. Chase and Bella, for example, are surface clean only, while several of our small 25 cm Labs and Golden Retrievers, such as Tucker and Chap, are machine washable. A good rule: for a toy that will go everywhere, a machine-washable small size is easier to live with. For a toy that mostly stays on the bed, any size works.
Choosing for an older child or teen
Older children and teenagers often choose differently. Realism tends to matter more: the right markings for the breed, a lifelike face, a pose that looks good on a shelf. Many start a small collection, so a first pick that suits their room and their favourite breed can grow into a set. If you're buying as a surprise, a breed they already love is the safest bet.
