What Is an ESSA? ESSA Dogs & Plush Explained

Your simple guide to what an ESSA really is

ESSA stands for Emotional Support Stuffed Animal. It is a community term, not a brand or a medical label: an ESSA is any plush that someone names, keeps close and finds comforting. Any soft toy can be an ESSA – no particular brand, no gear and no certificate are needed. In the ESSA community an “ESSA dog” or “ESSA plush” is simply that one companion.

An ESSA is not a medical device and not a replacement for professional support. It is also not an ESA (an emotional support animal, which is a live animal) and nothing to do with the US education law of the same initials. At ESSA UK most ESSAs are genuine Douglas® plush dogs – that is what we stock – but the word belongs to the community, not to us.

What does ESSA mean?

ESSA is short for Emotional Support Stuffed Animal. It is a community term, not a brand: people use it for the soft toy they keep close for everyday comfort. When someone says “my ESSA”, they usually mean one particular plush they have chosen and named.

What are ESSAs?

ESSAs are plush companions – most often realistic plush dogs, but also cats, wolves and other animals. What makes a soft toy an ESSA is not a label on the box but the role it plays: a companion people name, keep nearby, photograph and take on days out. Many owners start with one and slowly build a small collection.

Where does the word ESSA come from?

Nobody has been identified as the person who coined it. The full phrase “emotional support stuffed animal” was already in everyday use online by August 2020, and the abbreviation ESSA was being spelled out on Reddit by August 2022 (“ESSA (Emotional Support Stuffed Animal)”). From 2023 the word spread through TikTok, Reddit communities such as r/ESSAplushieshandlers, Discord servers and YouTube. If you see a claim that one shop or creator “invented” ESSA, treat it with caution – the earliest records are ordinary community posts.

What is an ESSA dog?

An ESSA dog is a plush dog used as an Emotional Support Stuffed Animal. At ESSA UK these are genuine Douglas® dogs – soft, true-to-breed and lifelike – which is why people get so attached to a particular breed or personality. Popular examples include Chase the Border Collie, Bella the Golden Retriever and Gravy the Patrol Pup.

What is an ESSA plush?

“ESSA plush” means the same thing – the soft plush companion itself. Some people say ESSA dog, some say ESSA plush; both describe a comfort companion you connect with. Browse the full Douglas Dogs UK collection to find yours, or see which Douglas dogs look most like the real breed.

Why are Douglas dogs a popular choice?

Douglas® dogs stand out for soft textures, expressive faces, gently weighted paws on many models and realistic, breed-true designs – which is exactly what makes an ESSA feel personal. Curious how the two names fit together? Read Douglas Dog vs ESSA Dog: what’s the difference?

How do people choose their ESSA?

People usually choose by breed, colour, softness, face shape, size – or simply the one that feels most comforting. There is no perfect ESSA, only the one that is right for you. Many start with a favourite breed: Border Collie ESSAs, Golden Retriever ESSAs or German Shepherd ESSAs. Not sure what the sizes mean? See the ESSA size guide. New to it? How much are ESSA dogs?

At ESSA UK, Douglas plush runs from £21.99 for pocket-size models to £99.99 for the X-Large Honey Golden Retriever; the classic 16-inch dogs such as Chase and Bella are £63.99 (prices checked 9 October 2026). Accessories such as harnesses, collars and goggles (ESSA Gear) are extra. Everything is held in UK stock with free tracked UK delivery on orders over £20.
